The Plot
Old men in sheds are not the only folk who enjoy allotment culture, now people of all ages and from all walks of life are digging away and enjoying their own fresh produce. The allotment is a place to relax, watch nature, chat to fellow allotmenteers and join a diverse community.
Allotment gardening is a labour of love, hard work but rewarding. Often you find that everything is ready to eat at once and that you have overestimated how much you can get through. When this happens you can find yourself hanging bags of excess produce on your neighbours’ front door knobs, ringing the doorbell and running away in case they refuse them as you have already given them too much!
Renting one is not only an inexpensive way of getting your hands on valuable gardening space but it's also a great opportunity to meet fellow gardeners and a relaxing, sociable way to garden.
The majority of councils and local authorities have a department which deals with the allocation of allotments. A quick call to them is usually the best place to start. There may also be privately-run sites in your area. Your local library may have details.
